I hope everyone took the opportunity to witness history today for the inauguration ceremonies. No matter your political view, there can be no question that today will be one of those days you will remember. We were lucky enough to be able to gather all our high school students together in our auditorium to view the broadcast on our big screen and help them understand the history that was being made. I hope Ryan remembers this day--of course, he isn't old enough yet to see it in its historical context but someday he certainly will. His view was more along the lines of "Don't they do this for every inauguration?" Well, yes, but.......
I couldn't help but notice how many times our ancestors came up today both in speech and in imagery. President Obama called upon the efforts our ancestors made to come to this country and to build a life for themselves. Some of those efforts, he noted, were to make this country a better place so that we could get to a point such as we did today.
Honestly, I don't think our ancestors had such broad national goals in mind when they boarded those ships and found their way to other relatives or community members who had immigrated previously. I believe our ancestors were mostly concerned with many of the same things we are thinking about today. We hope the world is better for our children than for us. It's just about that simple. And that's not such a bad national call to attention.
Just my 2 cents on the day for posterity. What are your thoughts?

I must admit that I've been having a hard time thinking that this inauguration is any more historic than the last. I guess that's because I never, in my heart, thought about Barrack Obama as being black... I know, it's all anyone was talking about, but I truly didn't think about it when making my decision on who to vote for, it was never an issue for me. It was more about who could lead our country, who could help the economy, who stands closest to my thoughts and dreams....
I kept wondering why everyone was making such a big deal of THIS election and THIS inauguration. I know on paper why this is so historic, I just don't feel it. Does that make any sense?
Then, when I think about it, aren't we SUPPOSED to think of everyone as the same? Aren't we supposed to see past the color of someone's skin? Am I that evolved? Probably not. But it is the breaking of a barrier in America to have our first black president. Can we now look forward to an Italian president? or maybe a jewish one? There are many, many "types" of people who have not been reresented in the office of the president of the United States, I guess I'm just not as impressed as others. I'll be impressed if the economy turns around, or if social security is shored up...
I know I'm in the minority about this, but isn't that the point?
